Elementary Classroom
Following your elementary classroom observation, describe how art materials, visual forms, images, or activities were used in the classroom by answering the following three questions (200 words total):
1. What form of arts integration or interdisciplinary learning units have you observed? In what ways were the visual forms investigated, learned, discussed, or produced in the classroom?
I have observed in my classroom a little bit of art integration but not too much. Most of the time, my teacher will integrate art by having the students depicts pictures in their writing notebook of what they wrote. This form of art was discussed in the classroom by having students depict their writing in pictures and getting creative with their pieces. She would tell them that they were free to draw there story however they pleased but that the picture should be focused around the center of the story and not a small detail of it. Students could use any sorts of materials in their desk which includes colored pencils, crayons, and markers.
2. Was there a Big Idea or theme used? If so describe. Were students working with narrative, observation, imagination, and / or visual thinking?
There was not really a Big Idea or themed used, it was mainly just students writing about a piece in their writers notebook that they wanted to elaborate on and a story that they could depict well in art. Different students we're working with different types of pieces. Most students chose to go with narrative pieces because they said it was easier to show in drawing. There were some students who chose stories from their imagination but said that those were more challenging to draw because their stories were so intricate and detailed.
3. What suggestions would you have for integration and interdisciplinary learning for this unit or lesson you observed? Try to think how you could make the learning more meaningful, connected, and deeper. Be specific.
For this particular one, I would probably have my students write a piece that centered around one central theme like fall or fairy tale kingdoms instead of having them choose one of their previous works. I feel as though giving them an all over theme would help them come up with a creative story that they are passionate about that they are able to depict well in a drawing. I could also have them write about a theme that we are learning in class and see them integrate that into their artwork as well.

Art Classroom
Following your art room observations describe (200 words total):
1. The content of the lesson, written and spoken objectives, and resources used
The content of this lesson in particular was teaching the students about how to connect our nation into their artwork. The students were given a piece of paper and were assigned to draw or paint what they believed America to represent. Some students painted the flag and others drew soldiers. Since this lesson was on Veteran’s Day, it was a pretty open ended assignment. The resources used were paper, paint, and colored pencils.
2. The teacher, her / his teaching strategies and format / process of the lesson as presented
The teachers opening strategy was to make the students feel as comfortable as possible. She did this by consistently asking them if they understood the lesson and aided them if they had any questions along the way. The teacher was very upfront with what she wanted her students to do and there was really no confusion. She gave them a little introduction of Veterans day, introduced the assignment, and allowed them to get to work.
3. Student engagement of the lesson, classroom atmosphere, and environment
The students seemed to be very engaged in the lesson because they could create whatever the wanted and they had freedom to do so. They also seemed really relaxed and it appeared as though this was a time for them to calm down.
4. Classroom behavior management
I thought that the teacher did a fantastic job of managing her classroom. The students knew the procedures and knew that they needed to clean up when the teacher asked them. Overall, the entire lesson flowed extremely well and fluid to my surprise.
5. Compare the art classroom to the regular classroom in regards to the teaching strategies, lesson presentation, student engagement, classroom atmosphere, environment, and behavior management.
The art classroom was different than the regular classroom. The lesson presentation was not as rigid and the teacher was able to get the lesson across very clearly. The student also seemed to be extremely engaged because they were in a comfortable atmosphere. The teacher also seemed to be pleased with the students because they listened when she talked and knew exactly where supplies went and the procedure of art class.
